Where to go when you cannot wait for an appointment
Checked October 2026
Same-day care in Oakville comes in several levels, and picking the right one is the difference between twenty minutes and most of a day. Working from the quickest up:
- A pharmacist. Ontario pharmacists can prescribe for a set list of common conditions, among them pink eye, urinary tract infections, hay fever, cold sores, insect bites and hives, mild headache, sprains and strains, acid reflux and yeast infections. Ontario says these assessments come at no extra cost with a valid Ontario health card, and it also notes that some pharmacy services may have a fee. Taking part is optional for the pharmacy and some want an appointment, so phone first.
- Health811. Call 811, free, any hour of any day, and talk to a registered nurse. You can also message a nurse online. The same service has a finder for doctors, clinics, pharmacies and mental health services near you.
- A walk-in clinic. Halton Region publishes clinic listings by municipality, including Oakville, and some of those practices run walk-in hours. Clinic hours change often, so call the clinic before you drive over.
- Virtual urgent care. Halton Healthcare points patients to a regional virtual urgent care service, staffed by nurse practitioners, for urgent problems that are not life threatening. It runs seven days a week, afternoon into the evening, and you book an appointment through its own screener. Confirm the current hours on that page.
- The emergency department. Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital’s emergency department is open 24 hours. Patients are assessed on the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale and seen by how serious their condition is, not in the order they arrived.
- 911, for anything you would call an emergency.
What to bring
- Your Ontario health card.
- A list of your medications, prescription and over the counter both.
- Your private insurance card, if you have one.
- Your allergies and current health conditions, written down rather than remembered.
Common mistakes
- Going to the emergency department for something on the pharmacist’s list.
- Trusting clinic hours you found online. Phone the clinic.
- Reading the posted emergency wait time as your wait. Halton Healthcare publishes an estimate for each of its hospitals; a more serious case arriving after you will still be seen before you.
- Leaving the health card at home. Take it even for the pharmacist.
How long it takes
A pharmacist visit is the shortest of these by design - one consultation about one listed condition. A walk-in clinic depends entirely on the day. For the emergency department, Halton Healthcare posts an estimated wait on its website, but that number is an estimate and triage order, not arrival order, decides when you are seen.
