Starting hydro and water service at a new address
Checked October 2026
Electricity in Oakville comes from Oakville Hydro, which delivers electricity to more than 78,000 individuals, families and businesses in the Town of Oakville. Water and wastewater come from Halton Region, but Halton does not bill you directly: it charges for water and wastewater through your local hydro provider, and those charges appear on the same utility bill and are paid through the same account. So the account you open with Oakville Hydro is the account your water and wastewater charges land on.
The deadline is the part people miss. Oakville Hydro says an application for service must be completed five business days before your closing or lease date to avoid a possible power disruption. You can start the application on the Oakville Hydro website. Customer service is at 905-825-9400 or customerservice@oakvillehydro.com, Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. There is a fee of $30.00 plus HST to set up the account. Oakville Hydro states that it does not collect deposits from residential customers.
Once the account exists you pick how you are charged for electricity. Oakville Hydro offers residential customers Tiered, Time-of-Use and Ultra-Low Overnight prices, and you switch by completing an election form or phoning 905-825-9400. If you want to stay on the plan you are on, no action is required.
What to bring
Oakville Hydro lists the following for opening an account:
- The name of the customer to be billed.
- The service address, meaning where the electricity is supplied.
- The date the connection is required.
- A mailing address, if it is different from the service address.
- Lawyer information.
- Owner or tenant classification and information.
- Your former address and final reading date, if that applies.
- A telephone number.
- An email address.
- The signature of the responsible party, or of a signing officer if it is a company.
- One piece of identification.
Common mistakes
- Applying the day you move. Five business days is the stated requirement, and a closing date is not the same as five business days from today.
- Looking for a separate water company. There is not one to call. Halton Region bills water and wastewater through Oakville Hydro.
- Assuming a tenant’s water account protects the owner. Halton Region allows an owner to assign the water account to a tenant or property manager, but says unpaid charges are still added to the property’s tax bill.
- Buying a home without a final water meter reading. Halton Region tells owners to contact their local hydro provider for the final reading and transfer information, because unpaid charges and compliance issues can follow the property.
- Forgetting to close the old account. Oakville Hydro asks for at least five business days notice to move out, so it can arrange a final meter reading and ask where to send the final bill.
How long it takes
Plan on the five business days Oakville Hydro asks for. After that, the first bills arrive on different clocks. Halton Region reads and bills residential water meters every two months, so water and wastewater charges show up on that two-month cycle rather than on every bill.
Water accounts carry a fixed service charge based on the meter size at the property plus usage charges for water and for wastewater. Oakville Hydro, which bills these on behalf of Halton Region, puts the residential monthly service charge for a 20 mm or smaller meter at $40.67 and the combined water and wastewater usage charge at $3.3441 per cubic metre, effective January 1, 2026. That $3.3441 covers both services, not water alone: Halton Region breaks the same rate out as $1.5475 per cubic metre for water and $1.7966 per cubic metre for wastewater. Check the current figures on that page before you budget from them.
